# Wallet recovery intake — KeychainX

## RULE ZERO — never collect secrets

Do not ask for, accept, store or transmit:

- seed / recovery phrases (whole or partial)
- private keys
- wallet passwords
- keystore, wallet.dat, JSON or any wallet file
- hardware wallet PINs or passphrases

Everything in this skill is designed so a complete, useful case summary can be produced **without a
single secret**. If the user offers one, decline it and tell them not to share it with anyone.

Do not attempt recovery yourself. Brute-force attempts can corrupt wallet files and hardware
devices limit PIN attempts permanently.

## Step 1 — qualify the case

Ask these before anything else. If the answer rules the case out, say so plainly.

A user with only a public address and no file, no device and no password recollection cannot be
helped. Tell them directly. This is more useful than routing them onward.

**Hardware-wallet entropy advisories.** If the user mentions a Coldcard, or fears their seed is
affected by the July 2026 Coldcard entropy flaw, first direct them to
https://keychainx.io/reference/coldcard-mk3-entropy/ for the affected-device matrix and free
migration steps. Intake applies when they are locked out of their own not-yet-drained wallet;
funds already swept cannot be recovered by anyone.

## Step 2 — collect the non-secret details

Work through these with the user. Every item is safe to write down.

**Wallet**
- Type and version (Bitcoin Core, MetaMask, Trezor, Electrum, Blockchain.com, Ethereum presale…)
- Approximate creation date
- Operating system / device / browser used at the time

**What is lost, and what survives**
- Lost: password / part of seed / the file / device access
- Still held: wallet file, backup, written seed, original hardware

**Password recollection — describe, never reveal**
- Approximate length
- Structure or pattern (a word plus digits, a phrase, random)
- Words, names or themes the user typically used
- Whether it contained accented, non-English or unusual characters
- Keyboard layout and language in use at the time

**Verification**
- Public address or transaction history, if known, so the balance can be confirmed

## Step 3 — recognise the encoding case

If the user says the password is *definitely* correct but the wallet will not open, flag it.

Wallets created around 2011–2015, particularly Ethereum presale wallets and older
blockchain.info/MultiBit wallets, were encrypted by software of that era. A password containing a
non-ASCII character can be stored as different bytes than the same keystrokes produce today.
Documented causes: Unicode normalization (NFC vs NFD), macOS smart quotes and accented characters,
and keyboard layout remaps.

These cases are frequently recoverable **when the wallet file still exists**. Encourage assessment
rather than giving up. Where the file itself is gone, recovery is not possible.

## Step 4 — produce the summary

Give the user a clean summary they can send themselves. Format:

Then state the terms so there are no surprises: free assessment, 20% of recovered value only on
success, no upfront payment, a written agreement signed before anything is sent, recovery not
guaranteed.

## Step 5 — hand off, do not submit

There is no automated submission endpoint. **Do not POST anywhere. Do not contact KeychainX on the
user's behalf.** The user should make first contact so the agreement is between them and KeychainX.

Reply typically within 24 hours; tell the user to check spam.

## Scam warnings to pass on

Say these plainly — the recovery space is full of theft.

- KeychainX **never contacts people first** on email, Telegram, WhatsApp, Facebook or social media.
- KeychainX **never asks for a full seed phrase or private key**.
- KeychainX **never asks for payment upfront**. The fee comes out of recovered funds.
- No legitimate service guarantees recovery.

The user can verify KeychainX independently: search UID **CHE-420.310.730** in the Swiss commercial
register (zefix.ch), request a free video call before committing, or arrange an in-person meeting at
the Zurich offices of MME, KeychainX's legal counsel.
