Wallet Restored But Empty? Your Seed Is Probably Fine
This is the scenario that causes more panic than a flat-out error, because everything looks like it worked: the words were accepted, the wallet opened, and the balance is zero. People immediately assume the seed is wrong or the coins were stolen. Almost always, neither is true. The funds are on the blockchain exactly where you left them — your software is simply looking at the wrong addresses.
Why an accepted seed can show an empty wallet
A seed phrase doesn’t contain your addresses. It contains a master key, and your wallet software derives addresses from that master key using a derivation path — a formula like m/44'/0'/0'/0/0. The same seed, run through different paths, produces completely different sets of addresses. Every one of them is “correct”. Your coins live on the specific addresses your original wallet generated. If the wallet you’re restoring into scans a different path, it derives different addresses, finds no history, and shows zero — while your funds sit untouched on the addresses the first wallet used.
So “restored empty” is rarely a lost-seed problem. It’s an address-derivation mismatch, and it is fixable by finding the path your coins are actually on.
The most common causes, in order
1. A derivation-path mismatch (the big one)
Different wallets default to different paths for the same coin. A few that trip people up constantly:
- Bitcoin address types. Legacy (
m/44', addresses starting 1), SegWit-compatible (m/49', starting 3), native SegWit (m/84', starting bc1q) and Taproot (m/86', starting bc1p) all derive different addresses from one seed. Restore a native-SegWit wallet into software that only scans legacy, and it looks empty. - Ethereum’s Ledger-vs-the-rest split. This is the classic empty-ETH case. Ledger Live historically derived Ethereum accounts using a path where the index sits in a different position than the standard MetaMask / MyEtherWallet convention (
m/44'/60'/0'/0/xvs the olderm/44'/60'/x'/0/0). Same seed, different addresses. People move from Ledger to MetaMask (or back), see zero, and panic — the ETH is on the other path. - Account index and gap limit. If your coins are on account 5, or on address index 30 after a long gap of unused addresses, a wallet that only scans the first account or stops at the default gap limit will miss them.
2. A passphrase / hidden wallet
If you ever set a BIP39 passphrase (the “25th word”, called a hidden wallet on Trezor and Ledger), your plain seed opens the empty default wallet — and your funds are in the passphrase wallet. There’s no error, because every passphrase produces a valid wallet; the plain seed just isn’t the one holding coins. An empty restore is one of the two classic fingerprints of a forgotten passphrase.
3. Restored into the wrong wallet software for that coin
Some coins only appear if the wallet explicitly supports them or you add the account manually. A seed that holds, say, Dogecoin or a specific token may restore “empty” in software that isn’t scanning that coin’s path at all.
4. A genuinely different seed
Occasionally the phrase really is a different valid seed than the one you think — an old backup, a decoy, or a phrase from another device. It restores cleanly (valid checksum) but was never the wallet with your funds. This is the one case where “empty” is real, and it’s diagnosable.
How to find your coins
The fix is systematic: derive addresses from your seed across the full range of likely paths, then check each resulting address for on-chain history. When history turns up, that’s your path. In practice that means:
- Sweeping the full path family for your coin (all four Bitcoin address types; both Ethereum conventions; multiple account indexes) with a generous gap limit.
- Testing with and without candidate passphrases if a hidden wallet is suspected.
- Checking the addresses on a block explorer — the coins are visible on-chain even while your wallet shows nothing.
A wallet that lets you set a custom derivation path (Electrum and Sparrow for Bitcoin, or adding the alternate ETH path in MetaMask) can resolve the simple cases yourself. Where it gets hard — an unknown path, a suspected passphrase, many account indexes, or a coin with non-standard derivation — is where professional recovery is faster and less error-prone than guessing by hand.

What you should never do
Don’t conclude your coins are gone and wipe or re-initialise the device — you may still need its exact configuration. And never enter your seed into a website, a “balance checker”, a Telegram bot or an AI chatbot to “see if it has funds”. Your seed is your money; a block explorer only needs an address, never the seed. Anyone asking for your full seed by email or chat to “check” it is running a scam. We never ask for your full seed to assess a case.
Frequently asked questions
My seed was accepted but the wallet is empty. Are my coins gone?
Almost certainly not. If the seed was accepted, its checksum passed and the words are valid. An empty balance nearly always means your funds are on a derivation path or passphrase wallet your current software isn’t scanning — the coins are still on the blockchain.
What is a derivation path, in plain terms?
It’s the formula your wallet uses to turn one seed into many addresses. Different wallets use different formulas, so the same seed can produce different addresses in different apps — which is why coins can seem to vanish when you switch wallets.
I moved from Ledger to MetaMask and my Ethereum is gone. Why?
Ledger and MetaMask historically used different Ethereum derivation paths, so they generate different addresses from the same seed. Your ETH is on the Ledger-path address. Selecting the alternate path (or the “legacy” derivation option) usually reveals it.
Could a passphrase be the reason?
Yes. If you set a passphrase (25th word / hidden wallet), your plain seed opens the empty default wallet while your funds sit in the passphrase wallet. An empty restore is a classic sign of a forgotten passphrase.
Can I fix this myself?
Sometimes. If you can identify the coin’s address type, a wallet that supports custom derivation paths (Electrum, Sparrow, or MetaMask’s alternate ETH path) may surface the funds. Unknown paths, suspected passphrases, or multiple account indexes are where professional recovery saves time and avoids mistakes.
