How to recover a Ledger seed phrase?
What is a ledger seed?
A Ledger hardware wallet can have multiple version of seeds varying from 12, 18 or 24 words, which is your Recovery Phrase. The combination of words will derive public and private keys for your Bitcoin or Ethereum funds. The position of each word is essential for the derivation of the wallet address. If one or more words are wrong, then the wallet address derivation path will point to an empty wallet. There is a total of 1024 words that can be used to create the 12 or 24 list of words. Where the last 12th or 24th word is a checksum word. Unfortunately, there is a false positive error that will generate a correct checksum even if the words are not your original set..
What are the most common errors using when writing down seed?
A very common problem is when writing down your seed, one or more words are either misspelled or misplaced on your recovery sheet. Depending on your recovery sheet which can be 12 x 2 or 4 x 3, people tend to write down words horizontally instead of vertically. Its also very common to mix words that are close to each other, like awake instead of aware where there is only 1 letter difference.
KeychainX has developed a custom tool that will scan through thousands or millions different variations of your seed in order to match the correct wallet address.
It is also possible to add a “secret” wallet using a passphrase or sometimes called the 25th word. We do also help individuals to recover those secret words if there is a numbers of parameters in place like your wallet address and a list of passphrase guesses.
You can read this article how we recovered a passphrase using the same technique but for the Ledger hardware wallet at bitcoin.com
