Jaxx (later Jaxx Liberty), built by Decentral, was one of the first easy multi-currency wallets — Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and more in a single app across desktop and mobile. It was discontinued, which means no official support and no updates, and a lot of people are now trying to get back into an app that barely runs. Here is what honestly recovers a Jaxx wallet, what doesn’t, and where we can help.
First, the truth about “resetting” Jaxx
The PIN or password protects the local Jaxx app. Resetting or reinstalling the app does not recreate its private keys and can erase useful wallet data. The standard backup is the 12-word recovery phrase. A preserved device or device backup may also contain recoverable wallet data.
What you need for Jaxx Bitcoin wallet recovery
One of two things gives you a real path back in:
- Your 12-word backup phrase — use it only in a trusted, compatible wallet. The receiving software must support the relevant coins and derivation paths; an empty balance does not by itself mean the phrase is wrong.
- The original device or a backup containing Jaxx data — the app does not always need to open for an assessment to be worthwhile. Preserve the device, app files and backups without resetting, reinstalling or wiping them.
If you do not have the written phrase, first check whether wallet data survives on an old computer, phone or backup. Recovery may be impossible if no private key, phrase or recoverable wallet data remains. A public address alone cannot recreate the private key.
How Jaxx Bitcoin wallet recovery works
Jaxx Bitcoin wallet recovery can involve checking an incomplete or miscopied 12-word mnemonic against a known address. Feasibility depends on how many words are missing, what is known about their order and which address or coin can be used for verification. We assess the search before promising an outcome. If the device survives, we can also assess its stored wallet data.
Recovering from the app itself
Because Jaxx stored the wallet locally, a still-installed copy is a genuine asset. The app kept its seed data on the device (historically with weaker protection than modern wallets), so if your old computer or phone still has Jaxx on it, don’t wipe it. We can work from the app’s stored data to recover the underlying phrase and move your funds to a modern wallet — even if you never wrote the phrase down.
Move to a supported wallet once recovered
After recovering access, move to currently supported wallet software. Use official sources, check that the wallet supports your coins and confirm the derived addresses before moving funds. If the old phrase or device may have been exposed, create a new wallet backup and transfer the assets instead of continuing to use the old keys.
What Jaxx was, briefly
Jaxx was launched in 2016 by Decentral and was later rebuilt as Jaxx Liberty. Decentral announced that normal operations would end on 27 March 2023. A note on Jaxx security
Jaxx drew criticism over the years for how it stored wallet data locally — early versions kept the seed with relatively weak protection, which security researchers demonstrated could be extracted from a device. For you, that history cuts two ways. It’s a good reason not to keep funds in Jaxx today. But it’s also why a recovery from an existing install is often feasible: the same local storage that was a security weakness is where we can recover your phrase when you no longer have it written down. Either way, the goal is to get your coins out of Jaxx and into something modern.
What we can’t do
A public address alone is not enough for recovery. If no phrase, private key, device data or usable backup survives, there may be nothing to recover from. A broken app or phone does not establish that all wallet data is gone. We can assess the surviving material, but we never guarantee recovery or ask for payment upfront.
