$3M Dogecoin recovery case study: an Android wallet
A retired truck driver had an intact Android wallet backup and a forgotten 12-digit PIN. A birthday hint gave us a practical starting point for restoring access to his Dogecoin.

The situation: an old purchase and a forgotten PIN
The client, a retired truck driver, bought Dogecoin in 2015 for roughly $1,500. Years later, the holding was worth several million dollars, but he could no longer recall the numeric PIN that protected his wallet. The amount in the headline describes its value at the time of the recovery, rather than a current valuation.
He still had a backup from his Android wallet: a Schildbach-style .bin file. Preserving that backup was essential. It gave us encrypted wallet material to work with while he reconstructed what he remembered about the PIN.
Why the wallet format mattered
This case involved a Dogecoin Android wallet. Dogecoin Core is a separate desktop wallet whose usual backup is wallet.dat. The two formats require different handling. A Core wallet.dat recovery procedure should not be applied to a Schildbach-style Android .bin backup simply because both wallets hold DOGE.
We first identified the wallet and backup type. A filename is a useful clue, but the originating application and the actual file format determine which recovery checks are appropriate.
The clue: a birthday and a 12-digit PIN
The client remembered a PIN about twelve digits long and a habit of building numbers from his birthday and other meaningful dates. A twelve-digit numeric PIN has up to one trillion possible combinations when leading zeros are allowed. That count alone does not establish how long a search will take: the backup format, encryption, hardware and available hints all matter.
The birthday clue let us prioritize plausible combinations. Dates can be written in different orders, with or without leading zeros, or combined with other remembered numbers. We used the client’s recollections to build a focused set of candidates instead of treating every possible number as equally likely.
How access was restored
We tested the structured PIN candidates offline against the Android wallet backup, working from a copy so the original remained intact. A matching candidate restored access to the wallet. The work depended on the combination of a usable encrypted backup and a meaningful hint; neither the public Dogecoin address nor the size of the balance supplied the missing PIN.
The client regained control of the funds. The recovery fee was success-based, and the client moved the recovered Dogecoin to a wallet under his own control. This was one successful case, not a guarantee that every Android backup or twelve-digit PIN can be recovered.
What other owners can learn from the case
Keep the original wallet backup and record which application created it. Write down the approximate PIN length, whether it contained only digits, the era when you set it, and any personal patterns you remember. Even an uncertain recollection can help prioritize a search, while a long, uniformly random PIN may remain impractical to recover.
