Recovering a locked Trezor with a forgotten PIN

A Trezor One with a forgotten PIN and no usable seed backup looks like a dead end. For an older device, it isn’t always.

At a glance — Wallet: Trezor One · Problem: forgotten PIN, seed backup lost · Method: device-level seed extraction + offline PIN search · Outcome: access restored · Fee: success-based

The situation

The client had a Trezor One they hadn’t used in years, couldn’t recall the PIN, and could no longer find their recovery-seed card. Normally a forgotten PIN is solved by restoring the seed on a new device — but here the seed backup was gone, so the funds lived only on the locked device.

The challenge

A Trezor One wipes itself after repeated wrong PINs, so the PIN cannot simply be guessed on the device. The only route was to recover the encrypted seed from the device and then work the PIN offline — which is only feasible on older firmware with a known weakness.

How we recovered it

Using a period-correct method for the Trezor One’s older firmware, we read the encrypted seed material off the device, then ran an offline search for the PIN that unlocks it — a small, fast space once the data is off the hardware. With the PIN found, the seed was recovered and the wallet restored.

The outcome

The client moved their coins to a new, current hardware wallet with a freshly written seed backup. Success-based fee, nothing upfront. Note: this method depends on the device model and firmware and is not always possible — we assess each device honestly first.
